Course Description: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking all comprise aspects of language arts. During this year, students will continue to build reading skills, construct meaning from a wide variety of texts, and become familiar with literary genre and academic vocabulary terms. In addition, expository writing and argumentation will be a significant focus throughout the school year. Instruction in grammar and composition are embedded in each lesson. All lessons are designed to prepare students for the Grade 7 FSA (Florida Standards Assessment), SAT tests, and other educational endeavors. This course is designed to enable students to master the language skills needed to collect and share information. The students will engage in collaborative and individual activities that allow them to experience new perspectives and to share their own
Class Rules & Expectations: Students are expected to follow our Spartan RISE Pledge to be respectful, act with integrity, behave safely, and strive for excellence.
Make Up Work: If you are absent or missing an assignment you can do the following to find out what you missed: (1) Check the calendar in the room and the monthly folder that correspond to the date of your absence. (2) Check out our class website; mrbruen.weebly.com. When you have finished the work, turn it in to your class's In Box for your . It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the materials to complete any make-up work and to schedule make-up tests and quizzes. For lengthy absences a parent may request student work through Guidance. County policy allows one day to make up work for each day absent (i.e. I missed two days of school. I have three days from the day I return to turn in my missing work).
Homework: Students will be expected to read and analyze one novel per quarter. (The first novel will be assigned after progress reports). The novel will be chosen by the teacher and each student will be allowed to check out a copy. Students will read the novel over the course of four weeks, completing analysis through the completion of discussion boards, quizzes, and writing assignments. The activities will be available through eCampus. Paper copies of the materials will be provided for students with limited Internet access. There may also be small assignments for students to complete to help them prepare for future classwork assignments.
Textbook: The textbooks for 7th Grade Language Arts are the HMH Collections. During the course of the year, these materials will be supplemented using other materials including poems, short stories, excerpts from novels, and primary source documents. A digital copy of the student edition is available through eCampus on the Instructional page. Students will also be supplied with a HMH Close Reader workbook.
Writing Portfolio: All extended writing assignments will be placed in a student portfolio. These portfolios will remain in the classroom. We will use them often to reflect on our work. If you or your parent would like to view your portfolio, let me know and we will make arrangements.
Grading: Grades are assigned according to school and county policies. Late work may be turned in for a reduced grade. I encourage students to self-advocate. If a student feels they will be unable to meet a deadline, that student is encouraged to come to me and explain the situation. If it is appropriate, an extension of the deadline will be arranged to allow the student to complete the work for full credit.
Preparation and Preparedness: Students are expected to participate in classroom activities and discussions to the best of their ability. Students are expected to be prepared for class every day. This means bringing the necessary materials and being in their assigned seats and ready to work when the bell rings. Students should take care of sharpening pencils, retrieving items from their backpacks, and collecting their materials before the tardy bell rings.
Supply List: A 1.5” binder, loose leaf paper, and pencils/pens. If any student has issues with the supply list, they may speak to the guidance department or with me.
Communication: All students and parents are requested to be on the county’s Skyward program, where daily attendance and grades are updated regularly. (Go to Milwee’s website for more information)
Parents: Please be certain that email and phone numbers in Skyward are up to date as this is our primary resource when contacting parents and students. Also be aware that a weekly snapshot of our lessons, activities, and homework will be posted on the Skyward Message Center at the beginning of each week. You can always visit our website mrbruen.weebly.com or e-mail me directly with any questions comments of concerns regarding the activities and assignments that we do in the classroom.
